Description: The long history of this project began with a Master Plan completed by a Boulder firm in the mid-1980's. For various reasons, the plan was never implemented, and in 1995, Design Concepts was hired to prepare a new Master Plan. Through a public process that included a hands-on workshop, the new plan emerged from a variety of conflicting interests. These conflicts included an uncertain and changing context that consisted of a controversial subsidized housing project next door, and the necessity for extensive infrastructure improvements. By the summer of 2000, the first phase of the park was complete, with a large soccer green, two roller-hockey courts, and playgrounds. The most unique feature is a lush community garden, with individual plots set along a stepped canal with pools of water and attractive plazas to encourage park visitors to socialize with gardeners. To discourage visiting deer, a tall fence, complete with a decorative motif of vegetable silhouettes was constructed. The challenge was to keep deer out while inviting the public in. Next to the gardens is a small maintenance facility with two bays, an office, and public restrooms. This park is being designed to express a theme of discovery, with an emphasis on the four elements of Earth, Air, Water and Energy. Each feature in the park expresses this theme in subtle ways, allowing the visitor to "discover" them on his own.
