Completion Date: ongoing
Location: Douglas County, CO
Description: Through a design competition, Design Concepts was selected to join the team for a series of new prototype elementary schools in Douglas County. The building and site embrace the concept of sustainability through a high performance building and environmentally sensitive site design. Xeric plant materials were used in planting beds around the building foundations and in key pedestrian locations of the site. Irrigated turf was limited to high use areas such as ball fields and play areas. Low-maintenance dryland seed was planted at the site perimeters. The educational campus was stressed, with a different learning landscape theme selected for each school to tie in with their curriculum, and was implemented in the play areas through the sandblasting of images and text, painted play pad games, and site layout. Examples of these themes are life cycles, travel and transportation, states and maps, math and shapes, and plants and animals.
