Description: Surfside Park is an existing aging swimming facility in Lakewood, Colorado. Surfside closed in 2004, due to high renovation costs and low usage. The City chose Design Concepts to master plan potential uses for the site. Surfside was to be considered a "blank slate" for redevelopment. The 1.1-acre site is primarily surrounded by residential properties. Multiple discussions with City departments and public meetings with neighborhood residents explored a number of uses and potential additional land acquisitions. To reach as many residents as possible, bilingual fliers were sent out to the surrounding neighborhood, and a Spanish speaking interpreter was provided for public meetings.

The existing site had numerous challenges, including leaking supply pipes, damaged pool decking and parking that did not meet the City's standards. The site has had vandalism problems, including broken fixtures and a recent fire in the parking lot.

A large variety of potential park uses were explored during the planning process. The idea with the most potential was that of a spray park. The City of Lakewood does not currently have a spray park in their system, and their growing popularity, coupled with the neighborhood's acceptance of the idea made this the chosen option.

The final master plan shows a splash pad park with shelters, ticket booth, patterned paving, landscaping and improved parking within the original site boundaries.
